Rani Avantibai Lodhi of Raigarh

Rani Avantibai Lodhi of Raigarh (1831–1858)

Rani Avantibai Lodhi was the queen of Raigarh, a princely state in present-day Madhya Pradesh, and a key figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. After the sudden death of her husband, Raja Kirti Singh, she took charge of the state and led her forces in a brave resistance against British colonization.

Rani Avantibai played a crucial role in organizing the local forces and defending her kingdom against the British East India Company’s advances. She led her troops with military skill, employing guerrilla tactics and local knowledge to resist British incursions into her region.

As the rebellion was ultimately suppressed and her forces were outnumbered, Rani Avantibai chose to commit jauhar (self-immolation) rather than surrender to the British, becoming a martyr for the cause of India's freedom.

Her legacy as a courageous warrior queen and symbol of resistance continues to be celebrated, especially in Madhya Pradesh, where she is remembered for her bravery and sacrifice during India's first war of independence.
